Schapelle Corby did it: so says most of NSW

29/06/2008 10:00:01 AM

A MAJORITY of people in NSW believe Schapelle Corby is guilty of smuggling marijuana into Bali.

An exclusive Taverner Research poll conducted for The Sun-Herald found that 53 per cent of people believe she is guilty while just 15 per cent say she is innocent. Almost a third of people remain unsure.

The poll was taken days after Corby was taken from her Balinese prison cell to a hospital in Denpasar suffering from depression. It found that three-quarters of people would support Corby serving the rest of her 20-year sentence in Australia. The Federal Government is in negotiations with Indonesia over a prisoner transfer agreement.

As Corby recovered from depression and weight loss in a private room at Sanglah Hospital yesterday, the debate over her guilt or innocence was fuelled by claims made by a convicted drug smuggler on last week's Channel Nine documentary Schapelle Corby: The Hidden Truth .

Malcolm Christopher McCauley said he knew the real story of what happened: "It [her bag] landed in Denpasar and she admitted that it was hers. What happened in between is a good story and the truth," he said.
